The UNM College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is recruiting for a HS Research Tech 2. This position will be affiliated to the Native Environmental Health Equity Research Center and to the University of New Mexico (UNM) METALS Superfund Research Center (SRC) sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) working on the accumulation and toxicity of metals and microplastics in plant and mammalian cells. The purpose of the project is to conduct experiments on microplastics and metals uptake in plants and to conduct in vitro experiments to study microfibers toxicity in human cells. The HS Research Tech 2 will be co-mentored by Faculty Co-Investigators on the grants. The HS Research Tech 2 will be expected to work independently and to help undergraduate and graduate students in their research projects. The research work of the HS Research Tech 2 will help the students to produce high quality science that can result in peer-reviewed publications.

Job Duties and Functions Include:

  • Conduct batch experiments to identify mechanisms underlying the interaction between microplastics, metals and soil in water that mediate the adsorption and precipitation of metals.
  • Maintain plants growth in the greenhouse in order to be prepared for the experimental work.
  • Conduct culture and hydroponic experiments. Help the undergraduate and graduate students in different types of analyses such as aqueous chemistry, spectroscopy, and microscopy techniques.
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Conduct cell culture and in vitro experiments to study microfibers toxicity.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • BS in Chemistry, or Chemistry and Chemical Biology, or Bio-Geochemistry.
  • Experience with conducting batch experiments to identify mechanisms underlying the interaction between microplastics, metals and soil in water that mediate the adsorption and precipitation of metals.
  • Experience maintaining plant growth in a greenhouse in order to be prepared for the experimental work.
  • Experience conducting culture and hydroponic experiments.
  • Experience assisting undergraduate and graduate students in different types of analyses such as aqueous chemistry, spectroscopy, and microscopy techniques.
  • Experience with oversight of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Experience conducting cell culture and in vitro experiments to study microfibers toxicity.
