An Off-Campus Work-Study Position - MUST have a Work-Study Award

WHO WE ARE: NMILC is a social justice organization whose mission is to advance equity and justice by empowering low-income immigrant communities through collaborative legal services, advocacy, and education. Each year we provide direct legal representation and assistance in immigration matter to thousands of immigrants. NMILC's model focuses on establishing relationships with local, state and national organizations and governmental institutions to expand access to legal services to historically marginalized immigrant communities.

Under attorney supervision, interns will assist with case matters before the immigration courts and agencies, as well as state courts. Intern responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Assisting immigrants with filing for relief, such as asylum protection, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, U and T visas, and other forms of permanent relief;
Providing Know Your Rights (KYR) presentations at ICE detention facilities, and related services to help asylum seekers achieve release from custody;
Participating in large scale legal clinics to provide services to immigrants;
Completing legal research projects;
Identifying legal issues and potential forms of relief for immigrants;
Drafting legal briefs in support of applications for relief;
Preparing applications, motions, and other filings with courts and agencies;
Drafting client declarations and gathering evidence in support of applications;
Conducting intakes with individuals;
Performing administrative tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications:
The internship is open to second and third year law students. Applicants must be fluent in English and Spanish, Dari or Farsi.

Applicants should have a sense of humor, excellent written and oral communication skills, and interest in immigration law and advocacy, a commitment to advancing and defending the legal rights of immigrants and refugees and should value working in a diverse and fast-paced work environment. Applicants must be available to be physically present in the Albuquerque Office.
