This position will be located at the UNM Prevention Research Center (PRC) and will be part of a multi-disciplinary group of researchers who are conducting a range of studies designed to inform the field of health promotion and disease prevention. Working with existing principal investigators at the PRC to design, execute, and coordinate multiple research studies and implement public health surveillance, the Senior Research Scientist 2 will provide technical leadership as well as oversee work of collaborators including students, programmers, and other project staff. This position will have a leadership role in submitting grant proposals, designing research studies, executing research, surveillance, and evaluation projects, submitting journal articles, and meeting administrative requirements of funded grants. The Senior Research Scientist 2 is expected to be familiar with cost-benefit and related analyses, health services research, advanced statistical and econometric techniques, project management, and analyzing data from multiple sources including administrative data.

Duties and responsibilities for this position may include:

  1. Independently designs, organizes, implements and interprets complex research programs of broad scope and significance by specifying models, research designs, and technical approaches for unique, controversial, or policy relevant issues via related prevention research studies and projects.
  2. Serves as principal investigator on multiple projects, defining the scope and direction of the research, engaging in project management activities (monitoring budgets, timelines, IRB, COI, etc.) in addition to leading scientific activities.
  3. Develops and implements conceptually related studies or projects; applies, modifies and extends knowledge of advanced statistical analysis, cost and outcomes analysis, health services research, and other relevant diversified scientific research principles to prevention research.
  4. Prepares grant proposals to obtain additional funding in areas related to prevention research, particularly in areas related to cost-benefit and related analyses, health services research, and health policies.
  5. Serves as principal author on reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as products for non-scientist policymaker audiences based on original research.
  6. Presents research and evaluation findings at local, national and international meetings.
  7. Provides technical leadership and consultation to co-workers, collaborators, programmers and graduate students on data collection using advanced statistical approaches, cost-benefit and related analyses, and health services research methods.
  8. Collects information on available administrative data in New Mexico and designs statistical approaches for incorporating them into analyses. .
  9. Supervises student assistants, administrative assistants, and programmers, to execute research studies; teaches and advises on research techniques; collaborates with principal investigators on design, analysis and reporting of research.
  10. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ability to plan, develop and manage multiple projects.
  2. Experience obtaining, cleaning and analyzing complex administrative datasets related to health.
  3. Working knowledge of conducting data analysis in STATA; some familiarity with R.
  4. Experience successfully working on research in a team environment.
