Position Summary |
The University of New Mexico, Department of Emergency
Medicine, is seeking a full time Medical Scribe. The position requires multi-tasking in a fast-paced, high-stress
clinical environment. The scribes will work in real-time alongside a provider
in the Emergency Department and be responsible for creating and maintaining
medical documents including history of present illness, physical examination,
and family, social, and past medical history in the electronic medical record.
Scribe responsibilities also include importing lab work, radiology, and EKG
interpretations, and patient records; calling for language interpreters;
initiating phone calls to skilled nursing facilities and families of patients;
communicating with on-site pharmacists; retrieving food, water, or blankets for
patients, and filling out death certificates. The Department of Emergency
Medicine utilizes a Vertical Care Model where Emergency Department providers
see patients in a triage area for evaluation; place orders for lab work,
imaging, EKG, or medications; and determine if a patient can be seen in a
low-acuity treatment area or needs to be assigned to a bed for additional care.
The Emergency Department Resuscitation Unit is a highly-specialized program of
care for serious injury or illness. The Department of Emergency Medicine staff and faculty
innovate to solve problems, are dedicated to serving others, and aspire to
lead. It houses several programs including residency, fellowships, and post-graduate
training; Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Academy; Pediatric Emergency
Medicine; International Mountain Medicine Center; Center for Rural and Tribal
EMS; and medical research. The University of New Mexico hospital is the only
Level 1 trauma center in New Mexico.

Conditions of Employment |
- Must successfully complete all required training within 6 months of hire.
- Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Minimum Qualifications |
High school degree or GED; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that is above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. |
Preferred Qualifications |
- Typing speed 55 wpm or greater
- Previous scribe experience
- Familiarity with medical practice software
- Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations
- Ability to work in an ever-changing, sometimes challenging environment
