POSITION SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision, applies skills and knowledge to determine degree of conformance of installation of
materials and equipment to MasTec Industrial and/or Client specifications. Performs inspection and/or layout of
various project activities, generates reports of conditions found during inspection activities, and notifies
management of significant problems. Completes documentation to attest to satisfactory inspection or test activities.
Potential to supervise multiple surveyors. Reports onsite to Project Quality Manager.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Promote and comply with all Company safety policies and procedures
  • Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features; transmits survey data to the proper files in the computer network and be able to acquire the data for field use.
  • Calls out reading or writes station number and reading in notebook.
  • Marks points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other identifying mark.
  • Measures distance between survey points with steel or cloth tape or surveyor's chain.
  • Marks measuring points with markers, paint sticks, tacks, scribe or stakes.
  • Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain or current installations.
  • Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
  • Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
  • Assume other special activities and responsibilities from time to time as assigned
  • Exercises own initiative in seeking additional work, or helping others complete their job assignments upon completion of regular work assignment
  • Continually work to sharpen skills and improve on the understanding of surveying
  • Conduct self in a professional manner in the presence of clients and co-workers
  • Capable of determining calibration status of measuring and test equipment
  • Meet project schedules and budgets
  • Interacts cross-functionally with craft personnel and other team members

SUPERVISORY:

  • Participate in weekly team meetings onsite to provide updates on resources and ongoing activities
  • Manage, lead direct reports, and mentor personnel in career development

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 6 years of experience working in the construction field with layout or survey responsibilities.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experienced with multiple types of survey equipment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Be knowledgeable of MIC Health and Safety programs and project specific regulations.
  • When on-site, actively participate in daily toolbox meetings with crews and subcontractors.
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior.
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints and procedure manuals
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
  • Must have a developing knowledge of layout and survey work
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical work in varying temperatures and outside conditions.
  • May need to maintain physical strength and stamina; Use arms, hands, and legs fully; Push, pull, and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; and stoop, kneel, balance, crouch, crawl, and climb to perform job tasks.
  • Stamina to perform this task repetitively and continuously for several hour intervals.
  • Uncontrolled environmental conditions: Constant change in weather and site conditions.
  • This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to- safety toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hardhat, vest, etc.).
  • Move in and around confined, cluttered, and uneven areas.
  • May need to work at heights and must be able to abide by all safety and fall-protection requirements; must be able to wear and utilize all safety equipment required for work at heights.
  • Evaluate information based on measurable standards; and see details in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes and shadings.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from drawings.
  • Keep good balance and work at heights.
  • See well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Hear well (either naturally or with correction.)
  • Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, and feet.

HOURS:

This position is a Full-Time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to projects requirements.

TRAVEL:

Travel required up to 100%. Position requires presence directly on the Project Site location with intermittent travel to residence of record.
